There were 34 players at York Chess Club’s Kreutz Creek Quads chess tournament on Saturday, April 25, at Kreutz Creek Library in Hellam, PA.
This was near record turnout and the best attendance the Kreutz Creek Quads has seen for years. We’re thankful for every player who participated! We hope you enjoyed your experience and come back to play again. Our next quads event is Saturday, May 23.
In the Open rated section there were five round-robin quads (four players each) and a swiss hex (6 players). Results are posted on the USCF site. There were also 8 players in a single hex in the new $5 Non-rated section, which was introduced in March.
One note about the new Open rated section fee and prize structure: With the former fee of $30 and top prize of $100, the club grossed $20 for each quad. However, we netted much less because of rating fees, small donations to the library, and other club costs. Our new structure, $20 entry fee and $50 prize, grosses $30 per quad. That’s a little worse for players who win, but it’s better for the players who don’t and it’s more sustainable for the club.
And speaking of sustainability…
It’s time for York Chess Club’s annual Give Local York fundraiser!

We have a big goal this year, 2,000 donors giving $10 each for a total of $20,000. We’ll use $5,000 of that for club operations and to fund this year’s Brian Costella Memorial tournament. The other $15,000 we plan to use for youth chess mini-grants for York County students.
You can learn more about the mini-grants on our Give Local York fundraiser page.
This is a year-long campaign, but you can maximize the impact of your donation by giving during Give Local York’s Big Give Period, which goes from 7 p.m. Thursday, April 30, thorough 6:59 Friday, May 1.
There is a large Stretch Pool of money that is distributed according to the number of unique donors each participating organization receives during that period. Last year, our stretch pool funds were a significant chunk of our final payout.
Also, as part of Give Local York’s Big Give Party, we’ll be hosting Chess on the Square Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. We’ll set up some tables and chess sets to share the game and our story with the public, so join us downtown! Let’s make it a chess party!
