The 2nd Annual Brian Costella Memorial Chess Tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Giant Food Store Community Center in Camp Hill.
The event will be a 5 round open swiss, with G/30;d5 time control. Prize fund is $400. Entry fee is $35.
Brian was the founder of this iteration of York Club and was well known up and down the east coast for his work as a tournament director. He died from cancer in Oct. 2024. York Chess Club dedicates this tournament to the memory of Brian and his chess legacy which spread way beyond York.
Last year, we hosted our first memorial tournament for Brian in New Oxford, in remembrance of his chess playing days at New Oxford High School where he and a group of schoolmates were part of a state champion chess team. He and those same schoolmates stayed close and founded the Center Square Chess Club, which met first in Cross Keys, PA, and later in Abbottstown, PA at The Altland House Inn at 1 Center Square.
This year, we’ll be hosting it at Giant Food Store Community Center, 3301 Trindle Road, Camp Hill. That’s the regular home of the Harrisburg West Shore Chess Club. We thank them for sharing their space with us and we think it is a fitting location for an event honoring Brian as he was good friends with many in the Harrisburg area chess community.

Last year’s event was a fundraiser for scholastic chess. We awarded $400 in cash prizes for the open rated event, but we also held a free non-rated section for kids who had never played in a tournament before and thanks to a generous sponsor sent each of those kids home with lots of goodies including their own tournament sets, chess books, and trophies, medals, and ribbons. Proceeds from ticket sales were donated to scholastic chess programs.
