In chess, the pawn is often underestimated. It is the smallest and least valuable piece on the board, but when pawns move together in coordination against the opposing king, they can create tremendous pressure. It’s called a pawn storm.
We’re applying that same logic to our fundraiser strategy: Small gifts, big impact! We’re asking for 2,000 donors to pitch in just $10 each.
The $20,000 Goal
Our mission is to keep chess accessible for every kid in York County and grow our community of players. More players means more fun! We’ve set a $20,000 target to fund our programs through the next year:
- $5,000 covers the club’s essential operating costs, including insurance, affiliate fees, and upfront costs for this year’s Brian Costella Memorial Chess Tournament. Plus, it will allow us to host other special events throughout the year, like the return of Burgers and Blitz!
- $15,000 will go to mini-grants for local schools, homeschool groups, and youth organizations.
These mini-grants provide the essentials for a chess club: high-quality tournament sets, clocks, and US Chess Federation memberships. By including the kids in the grant-request process, we’ll also help them learn about leadership and financial planning along the way.
How to Maximize Your $10

The best time to help is during Give Local York‘s Big Give period. If you give between April 30 at 7:00 p.m. and May 1 at 6:59 p.m., your $10 contribution will help us qualify for a larger portion of the Stretch Pool making your donation go even further. Your Big Give donation could also win York Chess Club one of many event prizes.
