Free nonrated section for kids added to event!
York Chess Club will hold its first charity event, the Brian Costella Memorial Chess Tournament, on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the New Oxford Social and Athletic Club Pavilion in New Oxford, PA.
The tournament will be a five round open swiss, with a time control of G30;d5 (Each player gets 30 minutes of time, with a 5 second delay before the clock ticks down on each move).
Cost to enter is $30 per player and there is a $400 prize fund. With donations, sponsorships, and club funds, we have covered the venue rental, insurance, and prize fund for the event. That means all entry ticket proceeds will go to the benefit fund for scholastic chess programs in Adams and York Counties!
FREE NONRATED SECTION!
There will also be a free nonrated section for kids who have never played in a tournament before. There will be some awesome prizes, including trophies and USCF memberships! Players should know the basic rules of chess, but this is meant to be a gentle and fun introduction to tournament play. We will give a quick introduction to clock play and tournament rules before play starts and there will be snacks and pizza! Don’t miss this opportunity to show a chess-loving young person you know how exciting chess competition can be! See tournament page for more details and to sign up. Space is limited.

The event was planned in memory of our founder, Brian Costella, who died in 2024. Help us honor his legacy and make this event a success so we can boost scholastic chess in the region. The venue is huge, with lots of free off-street parking, so we have room for lots of players! (Literally hundreds!)
Here’s a link to the tournament page where you can learn more and register. Please share the link and if you live in York or Adams counties, please download and share this tournament flyer as well.
