Giant Chess Sculptures Made From Scrap By Thomasville Artist

Tim Myers and his steel chess sculptures
Tim Myers, Paradise Township, poses with his chess sculptures Thursday evening in the Altland House parking lot in Abbottstown.

York Chess Club member Tim Myers, of Paradise Township, hauled three large sculptures of chess pieces in the back of his pickup to last night’s club meeting at The Altland House.

The king he brought to the meeting stands nearly 6-feet tall and weighs about 220 pounds. The base is a steel tractor wheel rim. The rest is sheet steel, fuel and water tanks, a tractor’s PTO shaft, and other steel scrap.

He also brought a bishop and a partially assembled queen, both proportionately sized to the king. He plans to complete the set with a knight, rook, and pawn.

At his workshop, he has an even larger set of steel chess sculptures. This set has a 12-foot king, a queen, a bishop, a rook, and a pawn, all painted shiny black. He’s still working on the knight, which will be the most difficult piece to build.

Though Tim has decades of experience working with metal as a tractor mechanic, he says these pieces are his first metal sculptures. He has previously made smaller wooden chess pieces.

Tim has been playing chess for 58 years and loves speed chess, but says he thinks he likes making these sculptures more than he likes playing.

He plans to display the towering chess sculptures in his workshop. We’ll be sure to take a tour and share photos on this site.
